The Perception-action Coupling
نویسنده
چکیده
Behavior is organized into stable action modes with qualitative transitions between them. An ecological approach attempts to account for these patterns in terms of physical and informational constraints, such as attractors in the underlying dynamics of action and perceptual information specific to them. Perception and action are coupled by laws of control that relate informational variables to parameters of the action system so as to regulate behavior adaptively. The case of optical flow fields and the control of locomotion is developed in some detail. This approach implies a view of perceptual-motor development as a process of discovering and exploiting stabilities in the underlying dynamics and the information that specifies and modulates them.

Transfer from action to perception: The effect of motor-perceptual enrichment
This study investigated the effect of audiovisual integration on action-perception transfer.40 subjects were randomly divided four groups: visual, visual-auditory, control visual and control visual-auditory. Visual groups watched pattern skilled basketball player and other groups in addition to watching pattern skilled basketball player, heard Elbow angular velocity as sonification. In first st...
متن کاملEmbodied cognition and circular causality: on the role of constitutive autonomy in the reciprocal coupling of perception and action
The reciprocal coupling of perception and action in cognitive agents has been firmly established: perceptions guide action but so too do actions influence what is perceived. While much has been said on the implications of this for the agent's external behavior, less attention has been paid to what it means for the internal bodily mechanisms which underpin cognitive behavior. In this article, we...
متن کاملEmpathy constrained: Prejudice predicts reduced mental simulation of actions during observation of outgroups
Perception–action-coupling refers to the vicarious activation of the neural system for action during perception of action, and is considered important for forms of interpersonal sensitivity, including empathy. We hypothesize that perception–action-coupling is limited to the ingroup: neural motor networks will fire upon the perception of action, but only when the object–person belongs to the ing...
متن کاملDevelopmental aspects of perception-action coupling in multi-limb coordination: rhythmic sensorimotor synchronization.
The current research examines the development of perception-action coupling through childhood, specifically coupling multi-limb actions to rhythmic, auditory signals. Sixty participants in five age groups (4, 6, 8, 10, and 24 years, with 12 per group) clapped while walking in four conditions: No coupling instructions, with instructions to couple clap to walk, and with instructions to couple cla...

Researchers have used full-body models to investigate how the dynamics of the golf swing, including those related to wrist function, may be affected by the rotation of individual anatomical segments. Recent studies have suggested that the inertia tensor, a physical property whose values are timeand coordinateindependent, may be an important informational invariant haptic perception of which is ...
متن کاملAction mirroring and action understanding in children
The past decade has experienced an increasing interest in action underestanding and children’s mirroring of others’ behavior. Behavioral investigations have focused on the development and significance of mimicry, goal prediction and imitation. Others have focused on the neural basis of action mirroring, identifying particular electrophysiological markers or related brain regions. A vivid debate...
